What is the SURE Program? SURE is a faith-based recovery and re-entry program for incarcerated and recently-incarcerated men and women, who are ready to change their lives and stay out of prison and jail for good.
Where does the SURE Program operate? We’re based at our Center at 220 Graybrook Lane in New Albany, IN. We work primarily with men and women form Clark and Floyd counties in Southern Indiana.
Why is it called the SURE Program? SURE stands for SUccessful RE-entry. We are SURE it works for the people work it.
Is the SURE Program for me? If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired; if you’re ready to trust God and ask for help to leave prison/jail and your own lifestyle behind; if you want to be free...truly and permanently free...then the SURE Program is for you. Since space in the SURE Program is limited: · We want to be sure you understand what the program is about before you decide whether you want to do it. · We want to be sure that you’re willing to work with the program, no matter what, before we decide to accept your application. This isn’t about us; it’s about you and your future. We want you to succeed, so we are asking you to make working the SURE Program a top priority.
What do I have to do to be in the SURE Program? We’ll set you up with a personal mentor who is like a AA sponsor...someone who cares about you and wants you to succeed. Someone you’ll get to know as a friend and advisor. Someone you can call for encouragement and support when you’re struggling. Someone who will not treat you like a child or judge you, but will look you in the eye and tell you if you’re in danger of losing you sobriety or going back to prison or jail. As a participant in the SURE Program, you will be required to: 1. Agree to work the program for the remaining time you are incarcerated, and for at least one year after your release. (You may stay in the program longer if you like.) 2. Make a daily morning phone call to your mentor. This gives you a chance to talk about your plans for the day, discuss things you may be wrestling with, and ask for help or suggestions. It keeps your mentor informed about what’s going on in your life, and gives him an opportunity to pray for and encourage you as you begin your day. 3. Meet face-to-face once a week with your mentor at a time and place of your choosing, subject to any restrictions related to your release. 4. Attend the following weekly meetings at The Center: A one-hour Group Mentor meeting every Saturday at 5:00 pm. A one-hour Life Skills class every Saturday at 6:00 pm. A one-hour Freedom Fellowship meeting every Saturday at 7:00 pm. A meal will be provided during the Freedom Fellowship meeting. 5. Make finding a job a priority. It may be hard to find a job, but you won’t find one if you don’t keep looking. We’ll help you to the best of our ability, 6. Stay clean and sober. Nothing else will work for you, unless you stay in recovery. There are some excellent recovery group meetings during the week that we partner with. We’ll tell you about them, and we recommend that you go. 7. If you have given up the use of tobacco while incarcerated, we strongly recommend that you don’t start smoking again. Tobacco use is an addiction, and part of the old lifestyle. As you continue to hang out with us, you’ll make new friends, including successful people who want you to win. You’ll begin to build a powerful new personal relationship with God, deal with the stinking thinking and negative emotional issues that keep sending you back to prison, and receive help with other challenges, such as finding gainful employment, continuing your education, and learning basic computer skills. You’ll become a part of a loose community made up of people who used to be in imprisoned, but are now free...and discovering the benefits of staying free.
What does the SURE program cost? · It costs our ministry $600.00 per year (about $50.00 a month) to work with someone while they are still incarcerated. · It cost our ministry $2,500.00 per year (about $50.00 a week) to work with someone after they have been released from prison or jail. You may be eligible for a partial or full scholarship. Please contact us for details.
How do I get started? If you already been released, just show up at our Center any Saturday night at 7:00 pm, and we’ll talk. Or you may contact us with the information given below. If you are still incarcerated, just write to Rev. Richard Johnson at the address below, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We are looking forward to meeting you soon!
The SURE Program offers long-term solutions rather than short-term assistance. We do not provide emergency services, including housing. |
